Boy drowns in Flat River

A cool dip in the water turned tragic for a Greenville family over the holiday weekend.

According to the Greenville Department of Public Safety, Christopher Michael Curtis, Jr., 13, of Greenville, was playing in the Flat River with his brothers and sisters near the dam, on Monday, July 5, when he lost his balance and went into a deeper part of the river.

Firefighters responded to the scene about 1:03 p.m. with the water rescue vehicle and attempted to locate the victim until the Montcalm County Dive Team arrived. The dive team located the boy in about eight feet of water at 1:59 p.m. He was pronounced dead at United Memorial Hospital a short time later.

Christopher is the son of Christopher M. Curtis, Sr., of Greenville, and Toni L. (Hirsch), deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 9, at Marshall Funeral Home in Greenville. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions can be made in Christopher’s name to the family for expenses.
