Two girls win all-state honors

Five members of the Cedar Springs Girls track team competed in the MHSAA Division 2 Track Finals held at Zeeland High School on Saturday June 5.  The team scored 12 points and finished in a tie for 18th place overall. This is the best finish by any Cedar Springs Girls Track Team. Freshman Katie Weiler led the team with a second place in the 3200-meter run. Katie sprinted past four other runners using her famous kick in the last 100 meters to take second place by ten meters. Katie also took 20 seconds off her school record time in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:05.43. Her time also broke the OK Blue Conference record in the 3200-meter run.

In another record-breaking performance senior Breeann Ovokaitys ended her fine four-year career with fifth place finish in the 1600-meter run. She broke her school record time by covering the distance in a time of 5:07.25. Her time, like Katie’s, set a new OK Blue Conference record in the event. Breeann and Katie both earned All-State honors in track with their efforts. Also Breeann will earn Academic All State honors with her upperclassman status and her 4.0 grade point average. Breeann later competed in the 800 meter run and just missed breaking her school record with a time of 2:23.46 and placed 14th in the event.

The 3200-meter relay team also had a record setting performance with their time of 9:56.36.  The team of Katie Weiler, Amanda Zinn, Amanda Balczak, and Breeann Ovokaitys broke there record by two seconds while running to a 19th place finish which was 2 places above their seed time. Also competing was junior Amber TerHaar in the discus. Amber placed 10th with a throw of 106’ 4”, just a few inches of making the finals.
