Golden Gloves ready to rock

Boxers are hard at work in Sand Lake, Michigan for the upcoming Golden Gloves tournament. Sand Lake has had a history of producing great fighters for the tournament over the years, most notably Cedar Springs own Troy Rowland, who recently lost a decision to Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. in Las Vegas.

John Mason, head coach of Sand Lake Boxing Club since 1974 says,” I feel good about this year’s novice team; they are getting better every fight. This years team is very strong, I believe they each have a good chance of winning championships.”

The novice class is led by 141lb Ricardo Rios, also a wrestler at Cedar Springs High School, who qualified for the regional tournament. Ricardo has spent the last 3 months training for both sports. “After being state runner up last year, I know how hard I have to work to win,” said Rios. “This year I am more confident because I have more experience and I believe I am going to win it all.”

The rest of the novice team includes undefeated 152 lb Zeek Rios, who is also a dental hygienist student at Grand Rapids Community College. In the 165 lb weight class is Matt Walker, who recently won fight of the night trophy for his last fight in Bath, Michigan. Matt is also a student at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. Entering the tournament in the 178 lb open class will be Chris Mason, who also was state runner up in 2007.

Don’t miss this year’s Golden Glove tournament! These fighters are very skilled and determined to win. The Golden Glove Tournament starts March 20 at the 44th Street Armory. Sand Lake Boxing Club is in need of sponsorship. If you are interested please call (616) 890-6738.
