Band Invitational a success

Band Invitational a success

N-bandThe 46th annual Red Flannel Marching Band Invitational was held on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Red Hawk Stadium. This event is the longest running marching band competition in Michigan, and hosted by the Cedar Springs High School Bands. This year’s event featured 20 bands, including two from the Cedar Springs Public Schools.

The honor guard from the Glen Hill Post of the American Legion performed the flag raising ceremony with the national anthem played by the Cedar Springs Middle School Eighth Grade Band. The spectators included this year’s Red Flannel Queen and the Court, along with parents, friends and families.

Bands participating in the invitational included Greenville, Shelby, Mona Shores, Kent City, Tri-County, White Cloud, Fulton, Newaygo, Fremont, Ionia, Battle Creek Central, Wyoming Park, Plainwell, Wyoming Rogers, Spring Lake, Whitehall, Kenowa Hills, and Sparta. The Cedar Springs High School Marching Band performed their show, Chasing Shadows, in exhibition to complete the show. All of the bands performed well and the programs were interesting and creative. The audience was given their money’s worth!

The Cedar Springs Music Boosters provide the majority of the volunteers for the day, along with high school vocal music students and their director, Linda Martino. Many corporate vendors help meet the needs for the event, as well as many people throughout the school system. Music Booster President, Amy Galle said, “We couldn’t be successful without the wonderful and continued support from local businesses, the Red Flannel Committee, the parents, students and members of our community. The spectators who follow the bands are important to our overall success as well.  But what it really is all about, is the students who put in so many hours of work to put on awesome performances.”

Awards were given out at the conclusion of the competitions. This year the awards were presented by Tim and Chris Mabie. Tim and Chris greeted each of the field commanders and passed out trophies and caption awards.

The Invitational was a great accomplishment and is the largest fundraiser of the year for the music boosters. Everyone is looking forward to doing it again next year!
